Kate Sheppard

Today in my blog we are going to be learning about Kate Sheppard . We have learnt about Kate Sheppard  and we had to read a story and answer some questions here is the work we had to do theses are the questions.

  1. Summarise the article in your own words.

Today in New Zealand Men and Women are considered equal . Liverpool England in 1847 Kate Sheppard was born, she was married Walter Sheppard in 1871 of the age of 24. In 1885 she joined the WCTU ( Women's Chistain Temperance Union ) shepherd became passionate about women receiving the right to vote. Women where seen as being better suited to looking after children and cleaning the house than thinking about politics.


In 1893 Kate Sheppard and her team collected the signatures of nearly 32,000 women  to show how many people supported their cause. They also had the support of the primeeministerat the time. The petition was 270 meters long!


Kate Sheppard was placed on the $10 note , In 1999 Helen Clark became the first woman to be elected as prime minister in New Zealand . Kate Sheppard would have been very pleased.

  2. b) Kate Sheppard collected 32,000  signatures in a petition
